Vienna Senators win 2007 Jacobs Cup with 6-2 victory over Fairfax Nationals
The Fairfax Nationals
and the Vienna Senators played a close and competitive contest in the
championship game of the inaugural Jacobs Cup post-season tournament.
Both teams played with the passion and competitive spirit that Coach
Jacobs was known for when he was a coach at Bishop Denis O’Connell
High School and the Clark Griffith League. Though he passed away several
years ago, his memory and legacy will be a strong part of Clark Griffith
League and Washington, D.C. baseball lore, and the Clark Griffith League
is proud to honor Coach Jacobs by naming its annual post-season tournament
after him. Congressman Tom Davis was on hand to throw out the first
ball to open the game. More

Former CGL position player Robertson makes it to the show as a relief
pitcher
The road to the
big leagues is never easy, but it can be even harder for a player who
is selected in the 31st round in the draft. For the Oakland A’s
newest reliever, however, that journey was a relatively short one. Three
years after being selected in the 31st round out of Birmingham-Southern
of the Big South Conference, Connor Robertson has made the major leagues.
A mere three seasons ago, Connor Robertson was setting homerun records
as the DH/1B at Birmingham-Southern. Now he is in the major leagues
as a member of one of the American League’s top pitching staffs.
Robertson, who transitioned from slugger to reliever during his final
year of college, was promoted to the big leagues from Triple-A Sacramento
on May 15th, replacing Huston Street on the A’s roster. More

Former Clark Griffith & Hokie Star Joe Saunders honors Virginia
Tech victims
With his alma
mater's recent tragedy not far from his mind, Saunders got special permission
in the form of a phone call from MLB Commissioner Bud Selig about two
hours before game time to wear a Virginia Tech cap during his start,
and he turned the opportunity into one of the better outings of his
young career at a time when his team sorely needed a victory. Saunders
held the Mariners scoreless for six innings, surrendering seven hits
and two walks along the way, to help snap the Angels' six-game losing
streak.
"I was really
nervous before the game and right when the game started for the sheer
fact of what this game meant to me," said Saunders. "I spent
the best three years of my life at Virginia Tech. This was the first
time I've ever had to do something like this, and hopefully it will
be the last." More

CGL Announces Inter-League Play for 2007 Season
The
Clark Griffith League has forged a partnership with the Maryland Collegiate
Baseball League (MCBL, formally the Eddie Brooks League) for the 2007
summer season. Current plans include inter-league play primarily on
weekends throughout the season, and a mid-summer All-Star Game between
the two Leagues.
Officials from both
Leagues are excited about playing under this historic arrangement, as
it provides an opportunity to improve competition and creates a natural
rivalry between Virginia and Maryland based teams. MCBL
